Never Human

My flesh holds you

An endearment

To a lesser known pain

We were almost perfect

In retrospect

That I knew you remains

The primary conciliation

*

There are those for whom beauty

Does not bare a commiserate truth

Those who defy all explanation

You were inevitable in every concession

I want to remember you totally

The way your bones bend

And your geometry defies all expectation

You were the best and worst of us

*

Death rarely enters a guest

And leaves often a rival

I know that the Devil

Has good taste

For the company he keeps

*

You held me as if eternal

As if the moon in a bestial winter

I will never know

That kind of love again

Because one such as you

Will never again be human
